Can you just drive through Waimea Canyon?

You drive up alongside it: Waimea Canyon Drive (Route 550) climbs from the town of Waimea past the canyon lookouts into Koke'e State Park, and dead-ends at Pu'u o Kila. There is no through-road to the north shore. Every stop worth making is a pull-off on this one road, which is exactly what the guided day tour strings together.

Do you have to pay to see the canyon?
